Launch of AIA Human Rights in China Campaign:
In their bid for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Chinese Government made a commitment to human rights. They promised to remove some of the tight controls currently restricting freedom of expression.
By allowing Beijing to host the Games you will help in the development of human rights
- Liu Jingmin1
It is now less than 4 months before the Games kick off and human rights abuses in China are getting worse - not better.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to help create a more transparent society in China. Freedom of expression is a universal human right, and Amnesty International believes the Games can be used as a positive step towards creating a society in China that upholds basic human rights.

CENSORED! Online Censorship in China
Chat rooms monitored. Blogs deleted. Websites blocked. Search engines restricted. Search terms resulting in nothing. People imprisoned for simply posting and sharing information. This is all part of online life in China. Who is responsible? How does it happen? Does censorship constitute human rights abuse?
AIA UNSW brings you the limitations on freedom of expression in China and the human rights abuses behind the world's fastest growing economy. Come along and see the search results for the CNN, BBC, UNSW or Amnesty International website in China.
Amnesty International NSW is proud to launch it's new website www.uncensor.com.au. This is the place to take action against Chinese Internet Censorship.

UNCENSOR! ACT NOW
There are people in China who need your support. In their country saying what you think, confronting authority, standing up for basic rights or just sharing information can leave you imprisoned, tortured or dead.
China has yet to deliver on its promises and the Olympics are fast approaching. We are demand the Government make China a free, fair and open place to live.
We need your help to do it. A lone voice is not enough, but hundreds, thousands, and hopefully millions of people speaking up together can bring change.

Meet Nu Wa
Like the monkey in traditional Chinese culture, "Nu Wa" - the Uncensor China campaign mascot - is strong willed, cheeky, energetic, sporting and intelligent. Nu Wa means outraged, angry young boy.
Nu Wa's name creates an association with the "Fuwa" - the five official mascots of the Beijing Olympics. Fuwa means "The Friendlies". Their overly happy and cute demeanor defies the worsening human rights situation inside China today. Nu Wa wants to set the record straight by speaking about the human rights abuses suffered by people in China.
Nu Wa's favourite accessory, a red bandana, was worn by many during the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989.
